Roald Dahl À 1 REVIEW

Ere a boy who grows into an accomplished cook goes in search of a final elusive recipe Pig is taken from the short story collection Kiss Kiss which includes ten other devious and shocking stories featuring th Pig The Soldier and The Wish three stories make up this slim paperback each one baffling than the last I ve never had an affinity with The Short Story or perhaps can only tolerate short stories penned by certain authors I am particularly fond of Nonetheless I can say with great confidence that Roald Dahl s three stories certainly make for a uick entertaining read Even if you would not consider yourself a reader if you have an hour or two to spare bored and looking for some inspiration on a rainy day Pig may be just the thing for you The first story told with charming wit in Dahl s unmistakable narrative voice tracks the life of young Lexington a baby boy who becomes parent less at just twelve days old as a result of darkly comic circumstances He goes to live with his eccentric Aunt Glossman who raises him with great care and in strict accordance with her vegetarian lifestyle A uick succession of unfortunate events transport Lexington and indeed the reader to places far from Aunt Glossman s farm and into a macabre world In contrast to Pig The Soldier begins on a rather less exuberant note This tale is striking in terms of its subject matter and the narrative voice which is employed The character narrating the story is somewhat confused throughout seeking answers to uestions relating to microscopic changes in his living environment which render him paranoid tetchy and short fused Though shorter in length than Pig the extent to which character development accelerates in this story is simultaneously haunting and mesmerizing An important tale which was no doubt written with all who served in World War Two in mind so many soldiers who returned to their homes changed men Finally The Wish is a story I am still grappling to truly comprehend The most notable aspect of this story is the extent to which detail tiny tiny details are honed in on by the author and described in such apt fascinating specificity that the reader can picture the scene in her head instantly From the outset when the story begins with an intrepid discourse concerning scabs and the manner by which one could and should remove them the story follows the inner workings of the mind of a rather imaginative young boy Just as the boy uses his imagination in the story to create the imagery pictured by the reader the reader herself must make use of her own imagination in order to fully immerse herself in this story and get a true sense of what it feels like to have one s imagination run riot past the point of return Three wonderful tales full of zest E wife who pawns the mink coat from her lover with unexpected results; the priceless piece of furniture that is the subject of a deceitful bargain; a wronged woman taking revenge on her dead husband and other I m just emphasizing what everybody has said here but the overall story was uite hideous sinister yet hilarious Initially I had to read this for my SAT classwhich was dreadful I uickly became fascinated with the story I think the way Roald Dahl utilizes language and dialogue in this short story has successfully incorporated some humorous elements to emphasize the menacing aspect of society I especially loved the ending since it showed how naivety and eagerness can harm you in some ways Additionally I loved the way Roald Dahl reflected the state of society at the time and even though I disliked the image that Roald Dahl built for Lexington which seems unrealistic for me at times the execution was amazing and I would recommend it to everyone because it s a short yet meaningful piece of work
