Since I m only the second person to review this book as of me writing this I feel the need to get a little bit in depth with this review than I normally get Got this as an Audible book on my phone I love philosophyseriously considered majoring in it in college However I know next to nothing about the topic of this book The three books in one concept grabbed my attention I looked forward to getting an in depth look at the philosophyIf that s what you re looking for don t read this book Just don t I m not giving it one star because I do agree with come of the concepts in the books Some of themReviewing your emotions before you act is a good thing It can help you avoid conflict that you don t need Also accepting things you can t change will take some stress out of your life However1 I don t know if this is just the fact that I don t know anything about stoicism but the ideas here seem vastly oversimplified 2 Not every negative emotion is a bad thing Anger and fear both have a legitimate place in your emotions They are not a wrong reaction to a situation Sometimes those are exactly the right emotions for what is happening 3 It is assumed in this that negative emotions are a response to you reading a situation wrong and not a result of the situation itself While this is true in some cases it is blatantly wrong in many situations 4 The author lumps all bad situations together in the same pile I m sorry but having your house burn down or being fired from your job isn t in the same category as being cut off in traffic and shouldn t be forced together to make a point for your book 5 The author mentions depression and anxiety While you can overcome these things those are serious mental health issues Cognitive behavioral therapy an offshoot of stoicism can help but it isn t going to help everyone 6 Manages to bring a cheating sports team into the story and how they used stoic principles to overcome adversity They didn t have anything to overcome that they didn t bring on themselves 7 Mentions that atheists and agnostics can follow this but is also constantly bringing up how stoics are trying to be closer to god 8 He practically begged for a favorable review at the end of each of the sections of this I guess other people were as annoyed by this as me seeing as how I said there is only one other review besides the one I m writing 8 Vastly oversimplifies Roman history 9 The author somehow managed to make one of my favorite subject boring to meI also have issues with the format of this There is zero reasons why this needs to be three books I put that in uotes because they are so short The Audible recording for all three books is less than 4 hours The books have a really bad habit of repeating things that are in the other books It gets repetitive and annoying I think that if these went though a severe editing process that made them into one singular book then it would be enjoyable if you can look past everything I mentioned aboveI said I listened to the audio book so I m going to make a brief comment about that The narrator is terrible Seriously terrible He sounds like he s trying to imitate a robot and when he isn t has random pitch changes in his voice so it was a little hard to concentrate on listening to the book I doubt this person has ever narrated an audio book before His way of speaking was just not naturalI m seriously thinking of getting another book on this topic so I can compare I feel like this shouldn t have been my first trip into the subject Hopefully I ll like other books better
