St s work at Tate Modern London Daido Moriyama was born in Osaka Japan in and moved to Tokyo in where he continues to live and work His photography is characterized by powerful high contrast black and white pictures largely concentrating on little seen parts of the city and highlighting the effects of industrialization on modern life in Japan His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art the Cartier Foundation Paris and the National Museum of Art Osaka. I have a pdf scan of the original book and the tonality is much much better I m all for the xeroxed ultra contrast look but in this case it is sloppy and negates the original impact of the work almost entiretyI gave three stars for the translated essays which are uite nice I like the way Daido writes Check out the book Setting Sun here on for insightful essays Also download an iPad app called shashasha It lets you buy 99 cent scans of these early works
