This Is Russia

With the language the culture and the gameHe tells stories about life at the baza a training base and how they'd have to spend big parts of the season away from their families Unless they sneak out His driver was also his buddy and a bodyguard There's the travel with hours upon hours on planes that are often antiuated and there are the teammates the doctors the pills the traini. Yep a decent story and pretty much what I expected Still I hoped to find something new that would bring this book apart from Dave King s King of Russia and not be yet another athlete s bio A decent read

The Kontinentalnaya Hokkeynaya Liga KHL founded in 2008 has uickly established itself as the second best league in the world behind only the National Hockey LeagueBernd Bruckler spent two seasons playing for Torpedo Nizhny Novogorod and a season with Sibir Novosibirsk in Siberia In his memoir he tells us what it's like to be an import player in Russia and the challenges he faced. Easy read as I was able to plow through it during the 4 hour wait in an urgent care Definitely worth the read for any fan of hockey especially those curious about the KHL Well written and well thought out The writer was very honest A lot of similar books come off as being critical but he owned everything I was on the fence about giving it a 4 of 5 instead of a 5 of 5 because I wish that he delved into his Austrian roots this is coming from someone who complains about seeing too much about a players roots in books It clearly played a huge part of his identity and what shaped his perspectives That said this book is supposed to be about the KHL and if I judged it based on that then it would certainly be a 5 of 5 book

An interesting take on the at times hair raising life of a pro hockey player in Russia Fairly professional presentation by the standards of self publishing But if you are only going to read one book by a Western hockey figure's experiences in Russia make it Canadian coach Dave King's 'King of Russia'
